The Land of Leonardo da Vinci

Day 1 Arezzo + Montecatini Terme

Late morning arrival in Arezzo and guided visit around its historic centre: this city of ancient origins was once an important Etruscan and later Roman centre. Beginning from Piazza San Francesco and the wonderful fresco cycle by Piero della Francesca we arrive in Piazza Grande which harmoniously gathers together architectural expressions and styles from different ages: Pieve di Santa Maria, Palazzo delle Logge, Torre Lappoli, Torre Cofani, Palazzo del tribunale. Lunch in a restaurant.

Afternoon journey to Montecatini Terme. Arrival in Montecatini and free time to visit the characteristic spa centre. Dinner and overnight stay in a 4 **** hotel in Montecatini.

Day 2 Montecatini + Lucca + Pisa

Breakfast at the hotel and departure for a guided visit of Lucca: its circular walls which are 4 km long, enclose monuments in diverse styles from different periods from the Duomo di San Martino to the Renaissance Palazzo Pretorio; Piazza San Michele occupies the area of the ancient  Roman forum, Via Fillungo is from Medieval times as is Via Dei Giungi and to complete the tour there is a walk along the bastions of the sixteenth-century walls. (Duration of visit 2 hours). Lunch in a restaurant during the excursion. Journey to Pisa for a guided visit of its characteristic historic centre: Piazza dei Miracoli where we find the Baptistery, the Cathedral, a masterpiece of Romanesque art, and the famous Leaning Tower. Nearby is the Duomo with its green and white marble striped facade. The city reminds us of its most glorious past as a Repubblica Marinara (Maritime Republic) in all of its monuments. (Duration of visit 2 hours)

In the late afternoon return to the hotel in Montecatini for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3 Montecatini + Le Terre del Rinascimento

Breakfast at the hotel and departure for the Travelling through the Renaissance tour. Arrival in Vinci and meeting with our guide. We will visit all of the places still present which transmit the emotion of Leonardo’s birth, adolescent life and frequent trips back to Vinci: the house where he was born in Anchiano, the baptismal font in the Santa Croce church where he was christened, his mother’s house, the Castello dei Conti Guidi, the waterways, landscapes and windmills on which Leonardo had the chance to practise his exceptional talents as an artist, designer and fossil scholar. We will visit the Museo Leonardiano and its collection of models, the Biblioteca Leonardiana (a library), the monument by Mario Ceroli, the equestrian statue by Nina Akamu, and the piazza by Mimmo Paladino.(Duration of visit 3 hours)

After the tour, transfer to a farmhouse restaurant to visit the wine cellars of a renowned vineyard and wine-producer and to enjoy a typical Tuscan lunch.

Free afternoon visit to Montelupo Fiorentino (another stop on the Travelling through the Renaissance tour). Its location and the presence of waterways contributed to the development of numerous manufacturing industries, among which ceramics, which in Montelupo reached great splendour during the course of the 15th and 16th centuries. This industry continues today in the numerous ceramic artists’ workshops and every year is revived during the “Festa Internazionale della Ceramica” (International Ceramics Festival) End of services.
