WATER IN ALL ITS FORMS

THE NATURAL BEAUTIES OF UMBRIA AND TUSCANY

(LAKE PIEDILUCO + CASCATA DELLE MARMORE + NORCIA + PERUGIA + LAKE TRASIMENO +

TERME DI RAPOLANO + SIENA + VALDORCIA + MONTALCINO+ TERME SENSORIALI )

Day 1 Lago di Piediluco + Cascata delle Marmore + Norcia + Perugia

Morning arrival to Lake Piediluco and from there a boat trip along the banks of the Lake. The eco-boat guarantees a navigation that is respectful of the natural habitat, allowing us to enjoy the natural beauty of the Piediluco-Velino ecosystem. The whole itinerary which lasts about two hours, includes travelling across the length of the lake, sailing around monte Caperno, also known as “Montagna dell’Eco” (Echo Mountain) because if you cry out when standing in front of it, it reproduces a distinct echo of well over two hendecasyllables, passing the “Vecchia Ferrovia” (Old Railway) bridge and entering the connecting channel with the Velino, then going up the river until Piè di Moggio. It is both a fascinating and enjoyable experience, as passengers are taken to places which are not easily accessible, where we can see an environment which is still uncontaminated and reach Cascata delle Marmore (the Marmore waterfall) in a different way.

Arrival in Marmore and meeting with the guide. These are the highest waterfalls in Europe where the water falls 165 metres. This work of water engineering was built by the Romans to drain away the stagnant waters of the Piana Reatina (Reatina Plain). The guided visit will lead us through a system of wooden bridges and walkways up to the Balcone degli Innamorati (the Lovers’ balcony) where it will be possible to observe the water fall from up close and also appreciate the freshness of a sparkling shower.

Lunch in a restaurant with a menu based on typical local products.

Afternoon: transfer to Norcia. You will have free time to visit this characteristic town of Roman origin  where St. Benedict and St. Scholastica, the twin saints and founders of the Benedictine order, were born in 480. After your free time, we will meet in a renowned wine bar in the historic centre for an appetizer based on typical cured meats and cheeses, accompanied with selected Umbrian wines.

Late afternoon departure for Perugia for dinner and overnight stay in a 4**** hotel.

Day 2 Perugia + Lake Trasimeno

Breakfast at the hotel and departure for Lake Trasimeno. Guided visit around Città della Pieve: the visit will give us the opportunity to see many of the works by Pietro Vannucci called Perugino. We will start with the church of S. Maria dei Servi built in 1343, which is important because of its gothic-style interior and because inside almost all of Perugino’s frescoes are preserved, as well as his “Deposition from the Cross”; we will then visit the Duomo which is also rich with the work of great artists, the Rocca (fortress), Palazzo Bandini, Palazzo della Corgna, S.Maria dei Bianchi where we can find “The adoration of the Magi” by Perugino. In addition, we will see the same views that Perugino saw and reproduced, the countryside with Lake Trasimeno in the distance. Transfer to the shores of Lake Trasimeno and lunch in a restaurant based on fresh-water fish.

Afternoon transfer to Isola Polvese by boat and guided visit around the island.

In late afternoon return to the hotel for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3 Perugia + Rapolano Terme

Breakfast at the hotel and departure for Rapolano Terme. Entrance to the thermal baths of Rapolano. With its open air and covered thermal pools, the park allows everyone to discover perhaps the most pleasant aspect of water: the physical pleasure of perfect relaxation, lulled by the hot thermal waters, a delight that the Romans knew well and which we are slowly rediscovering.

Independent lunch (there is a bar in the spa complex where you can enjoy a quick and light lunch).

Afternoon departure for Siena. Guided visit around the city: focusing on the most significant locations following the ancient Via Francigena, the back bone of the great medieval Siena, we will visit the Basilica of San Domenico where the relics of Saint Catherine are kept, Monte Dei Paschi, the historical site of the first bank in Europe, Piazza Tolomei, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta with works by Michelangelo, Bernini and Giovanni Pisano, before reaching Piazza del Campo.

Transfer to a 4 **** hotel in Siena for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 4 Siena + Val d Orcia + Monte Oliveto Maggiore + Montalcino

Breakfast at the hotel and departure with the Treno Natura (an old-style steam train).

We will leave Siena for Asciano, crossing the Sienese crete and the Val d' Orcia until Monte Antico and San Giovanni D'asso from there, transfer by coach to the Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore for a guided visit of the cloister containing frescoes depicting the life of St. Benedict by Luca Signorelli, the library which holds  manuscripts and incunabula of rare value, the ancient Farmacia where it is possible to buy extracts, syrups, herbal teas and ointments made by the monks themselves.

Traditional lunch in restaurant.

Afternoon journey to Montalcino, where you will have free time to visit this characteristic Tuscan village. After this is a visit to a famous wine cellar producing Brunello followed by a tasting.

Late afternoon return to the hotel in Siena for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 5 Siena + Terme Sensoriali

Breakfast at the hotel and departure for Chianciano Terme. Entrance to the Terme Sensoriali. This is a spa complex based on the criteria of Naturopathy where we will follow an itinerary which lasts for about 3 hours. We will be able to experience water in all its forms: from tropical showers to Ayurvedic traditions and ice crash, an Etruscan sauna, a Turkish bath - the thermal water in the pools, sprayed in the showers, blended into exclusive products represents a gentle cure for the body which resolves many conditions but above all gives us a pleasant sensation of well-being. Light lunch in a restaurant (3 course meal).

Afternoon: return to your base.
